The question being asked - did Mr. Modi con the nation with his tag line "Acche Din Annewale hai" (Good days are coming)? The answer to those raising such a question - you have been had. Honestly; what were those people thinking? Did they believe that the malaise of 15 years will get cured in 15 days? Were they voting for a Prime Minister or a Perfect Magician?
I for one was glad that Mr. Modi took some bold and unpopular steps - which I thought were a step in the right direction. My happiness was quashed in no time when the rise in rail fares was retracted to suit the needs of the BJP and alliance partner in Maharashtra keeping the State elections in mind. Why? A political victory takes priority over the repair of the Nation I guess. I am sure there were other ways to placate the population of the State and particularly Mumbai City. Anyway it's too early to do a critique of a Government just about a month old. Good thing is that it is hearing the people's voice - good or bad. Maybe administering a full dose of bitter pills at one go is not such a great idea. But, treating the disease is going to be painful and a slow solution will prolong if not compound the ill effect.
Dr. Modi's prescription for bringing India back to health will be announced on 10th of July. My own guess was that his team wanted to raise the tax free slab from Rs 200,000 to Rs 500,000 as a trade off for the increase in prices that would come about from withdrawal of subsidies; and also a measure of bringing in better tax compliance. I don't know if this will happen now. The DTC draft that was floated in 2008 was revolutionary and had it been implemented the Nation would have been on a different trajectory. But it was so watered down that it made little difference between the old and new. The tax structure is totally out of sync with reality. On one hand there are announcements of billion dollar deals and on the other taxation starts at a measly US$ 5000 per annum? In a nation where barely 3% ( 36 million) pay any amount of personal income tax and only about 43,000 pay tax over Rs 1 million ( US$ 15,000) it is hard to reconcile the fact that India has over 200,000 UHNW families and close to 1 million homes with over US$ 1 million in wealth. The honest taxpayer happens to be the non governmental working class. Reason is obvious. Most government employees do not declare their other income and the super rich have accountants who find the available loopholes to escape larger tax.
Why then have Income Tax at all? Why not dismantle the mechanism that creates black money to begin with and simply move to a simple form of indirect consumption tax (already there) with just capital gains and wealth tax? Well everyone in this nation consumes and everyone has assets. It was reported that in this year's elections; several candidates reported assets over US$ 1 million (with a couple over a billion). If the yardstick of million dollar plus homes; luxury cars - boats - planes is applied; India would certainly see a reported ten fold jump in the number of UNHW and HNW individuals and families. If there is no income tax then there is no need to give subsidies either. Prices will go up and so will the GST (Goods and Services Tax). Better governance means a trimer government. Smart people will always find a job or become entrepreneurs.
It is said easier to give advice and easier said than done. There are clever people in the bureaucracy and cleverer people in politics. I have a simple mind and it says to remove corruption just remove the reason for it. Will it happen? - I don't know. Will we see happy days?That depends. Will Mr. Modi be the Magician or Doctor for India? he can be both or end up as the biggest Devil. Reason? The Nation has trusted him to deliver and if he fails - India will be worse than hell.

Two plus two equals whatever when it comes to wealth in India
The Indian nation is feeling good. Real good. The "Modi Effect" seems to be better than the "Axe Effect". If one has money who needs a deo to attract the "honey"; and everyone seems to have suddenly become richer with the markets jumping up 25% in under a month.
A table on Global Wealth caught my eye. It says India with 175,000 US$ millionaire households and 248,000 households with wealth of over US$ 100 million - the super rich or Ultra High Net Worth (UHNW) households is ranked 15th and 13th on the global scale.
I don't have an issue with the second statistic but I think the former has missed a one or two in front of the 175,000 figure. Going by what I have observed and/or heard and/or read - everyone in India behaves like a dollar millionaire. Don't believe me - just walk into an exclusive brand showroom or of a luxury car brand. Simpler, just take a flight or a stay in a hotel. I think India has over a million or two households with an investable net worth exceeding US$ one million. If one includes some rich non tax paying farmers (agro income exempt from personal income tax); the figure would jump to nearly ten million millionaires I assume. In a Country of 1.2 billion + people; the figure would still remain under 1% of the total population.
But then, why are there only 43,000 tax pay payers paying a tax of over Rs. 1 million (US$ 15,000) per annum? It just does not add up.

What happens to the Aam Aadmi Party?
Dear Mr. Kejriwal
It is honestly thanks to AAP that India has achieved a stable Government at the centre; and I am not being sarcastic here. The truth about the Congress would never have become so public or believable had any other party brought it out. It is even more credible that AAP was able to transform itself as a national party knowing well that it would not make a significant presence in Parliament at first go.
I think the purpose was achieved. AAP was truly never meant to be a political party but the conscience of the people. The threat that the conscience could become so powerful and manifest itself as a force in politics made a lot of them shake in their dhotis or pyjamas; and for the first time many politicians realised that this nation will not accept any "ullu banawing".
Election 2014 was a good war to fight. You have learnt the tactical errors you made. Would the results have been different had you not - maybe not. But in my mind; you are about to make one more by staking your claim on the Delhi assembly once more - and this could be one big disaster as it will draw you from fulfilling the Party's larger goal of ensuring those in power do not go wayward rather than holding on to power.
You are in a unique position to figure out who really stands by AAP and chaff out the opportunistic parasites that had tickets and power in mind. Clean up within and be ready to become the true opposition from outside the Parliament as there is no one in there that can truly oppose the might of Mr. Modi. I believe he alone cannot bring about the change for he has several people within NDA who are there for fulfilling their own goals for their own benefit and not that of the Nation.
Constructive opposition rather than anarchy should be the new approach. Continue the push for "Lokpal" and "Lokayut" as well as bringing about changes in the laws and licensing regime that encourages corruption through the numerous catch-22 clauses. The majority - cutting across all division lines has spoken that it prefers to see action towards progress more than a fight to end corruption.
While the Nation celebrates; AAP should be thinking of reinventing itself to conform to the changed mood of the people. Your actions between now and 2019 will decide if the Party has made a real difference. There are many who believe in AAP and will not let it get forgotten.

The election tamasha has ended. Results are out. Modi has won and how.
While he gives all the credit for the victory to the BJP cadre, for having allowed him to lead the Party; we all know that it was not smooth sailing for him within the BJP itself. His first speech as PM elect on the 20th of May 2014; an an emotional one filled with tears has been called "high drama" by quite a few. It's the first time in 25 years a non Congress party has secured absolute majority in the Parliament, drama or not - it way Modi's day in the Sun. I am impressed as a Citizen that he treated what is called the "Parliament Circus" as a temple of democracy by bowing his head before entering. He really has no need for the NDA partners now, but by telling them how grateful he was to them for his victory, he has sent out the right signal to even other Parties not aligned to the NDA that friendship with Modi is more than lip service. The perfection was of course not blaming the former Government on any count just speaks volumes about this man.
I watched a few of his pre election speeches and found Modi's tone and tenor resemble that of a preacher. With his white beard and saffron kurta he looked every bit a spiritual guru. Yet his words were direct - targeted at issues. In my mind the ace was asking the Muslim community a pointed question " what did they hate more - Hindus or poverty?" The results prove that the electorate rose above the differences of caste, creed and religion to mandate any person willing to fight their common enemy - poverty and imbalance. In the days I used to hobnob with politicians a lot I heard a Congress MP say that the nation believes that BJP is a communal party when in fact it is the Congress that has always relied on the British divide and rule formula. Guess people have wisened up and for the better. I heard another one say that the war cry of late Mrs. Gandhi was "Garibi hatao" (eradicate poverty) - now that he said was impossible so the Congress was hell bent on making everyone poor. If everyone was poor then there was nothing to remove anyway. I hope BJP does not fall in that trap and Modi's war cry should be "Prosperity for all". For that to happen; corruption will need to be contained - and for that; the legal and licensing framework will have to be overhauled to a point where the thousands of catch 22's in our system will have to be removed. I have waited for 50 years and am willing to wait for 5 more to see a radical change in my Country.
Congratulations to Mr. Modi; and not to forget Mr. Amit Shah. Both of them have endured the label of being the "Goons of Godhra" and the results are the biggest apology to them both. While Mr. Modi has been vocal; Mr. Shah silently did his work - deep within the very territory of a community which had nothing but despicable things to say about him; to annihilate any opposition. I would love to see him as Home Minister.
The elections threw up another hero. Contrary to him being labeled a "cat" as compared to his father being called a "tiger"; Mr. Udhav Thakrey silenced everyone with his supersonic roar. No one heard it and now everyone in the NDA alliance as well as the opposition is feeling it. He is possibly Maharashtra's next CM. Hopefully his cousin will give him a hug and return to the fold. Will do this State of Maharashtra a lot of good; for he having tasted defeat - and he knows why - will have hopefully learnt his lessons on governance. At the same time I pray that Mr. UT's son does not go belligerent like Mr. Rane Jr. and alienate himself from the people who look up to him as the next big thing in Maharashtra politics.
I must admit that I do not have much respect for politicians. Even those in the NDA. I would hope that many of the known names do not make it as Ministers within the cabinet but are relegated to Party duties - specially those who have been charged with corruption and/or did not have much of a track record in the previous NDA regime.
Mr. Prime Minister; a statement I read today in the papers by someone in the opposition was generally quite right in saying that even a lamp post fighting on a NDA ticket would win because people voted for Modi and not the candidate or Party per se. Please do not disappoint this great Nation. It has taken the people great courage to put their faith and fate in you. Go down in history as the greatest PM India ever had.

Republic Of Modi
Latest poll predictions indicate a sweep by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by BJP. If it is to be believed then the alliance should get some 272+ seats with BJP itself garnering 225+. Impressive.
I think the nation is no mood for a re-poll and given the choice between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea and possibly Fire and Brimstone; the nation may as well jump in the sea with Modi where it sees a glimmer of hope for survival. My own view is that a Strong Modi in governance needs a strong Kejriwal in opposition to keep the BJP in check. Take out Modi from the equation and I would cross out BJP as a party to be considered in the first place. The corruption level in BJP is possibly even higher than that in Congress. I once heard an explanation for that as well. Congress guys have had decades to make money and other governments don't know how long they will survive so make hay while the sun shines.
What we need now is to see India shining again. Prosperity comes from economic growth not escalation in real estate and food prices. Laws have to become rational not incentives to encourage corruption. Public servants must do the work they are paid for as salary not bribes. Education must be actual not just dispensed on paper.
The Country is expecting an overnight miracle and that is my fear. Too much is expected in too little a time; and this is so dangerous now that the people have lost their patience. There are many who say that Modi is not what he say he is. But then if you handle snakes the charmer has to immunize himself with the same venom and to an extent behave like a snake himself.
I wish Rahul along with Priyanka and his bright young brigade split off from the Congress and start a party of their own; distancing themselves from Sonia. Probably even join Kejriwal's AAP which could do with a better dose of political education. The combination could probably create a very strong opposition sufficient to create the right balance of ying and yang for India.
Well India may not become RAMraj but we are near sure of seeing a ROMraj called Republic of Modi.

"Friends Indian Countrymen....
Lend me your ears; eyes, office, money, and whatever for I will change the face of India if my Party wins" is all what each politician has to say. Asking me for donations; why? The ruling guys are running their campaign on tax money - putting out adverts to make it known how much we have progressed ('cause it does not show we have); and the guys not ruling are spending a lot of the monies collected by whatever means (hint hint) in stating how they will ensure progress if we win and/or negating the claims of the rulers.
Election time is friendship time. LJP broke off partnership with BJP because of the Godhra incident. But when the Court has decreed Modi as "Not Responsible" the LJP too follows suit and joins its bogey to its election train. DMK a staunch critics of the BJP is also subtly coming out of the closet in expressing love love for NaMo. Election time is also make enemy time; specially for Lalu Yadav - LJP and Congress both leaving him curling the hair on his ears.
Being left out is something the armed forces are expressing. They are asking for newer and better equipment to compensate the falling enlistment based on it not being such a lucrative career anymore and also the high probability of dying in times of peace. The taxpayers are questioning the high defense spending bills if the armed forces have not been armed correctly (defense is one of the biggest forex cost to the nation). Our true guardians are faced with the case of the enemy within in terms of decision makers and the equipment they use. Very sad to see such wasteful deaths. So will the next political ad. read "We are Proud to have achieved regression in our armed forces"? How about another ad. which says "We allowed ourselves to be exposed - More than a 100 scams worth 150,000 + crores revealed in our rule".
Now; Mr. Modi has been branded as an "impotent" "chaiwalla" by his opposition; and he is smiling. Guess it means another large vote bank that cuts across all caste and religious lines will now consider him as the person to vote for. Rahul may be considering a show called "Comedy Nights (telecast in the day) with Rahul"- as an alternate career; but, I do applaud him for showing his ire at SK's remark on NaMo. Mr. Kejriwal is now all out to expose the potential Ambani - BJP nexus. Boss when no one could figure out who crashed MA's Aston Martin; it will be 54,000 times harder to prove the supposed gas-scam in the making - which apparently has been signed by MA with the Congress Ministry. As a Reliance Shareholder though, I am disappointed. Late Mr. Ambani started the Company with the philosophy "become rich and make shareholders richer". The sons however did not pay attention to the latter part. No longer do people swear by Reliance as they used to in reverence.
A person I think very highly of has been arrested and that makes me sad. Mr. Roy; the follower of Mr. Ambani Sr.'s principles has been clamped on charges which I frankly find quite strange when it was the same system that allowed him to run the writ so far. Conspiracy theory suggests that the timing coincides with elections and his arrest may have something to do with starving his supposed political benefactors of much needed funds. Its a story for Ripleys Believe it or Not.
Finally, with politics becoming so much more interesting; I have lost interest in following the travels and travails of the Indian Cricket team. I have a conspiracy theory on why they happen to have become the favourite losing team - but then maybe the answer is too obvious.

So will the next political ad. read "We are Proud to have achieved regression in our armed forces"? How about another ad. which says "We allowed ourselves to be exposed - More than a 100 scams worth 150,000 + crores revealed in our rule".
Now; Mr. Modi has been branded as an "impotent" "chaiwalla" by his opposition; and he is smiling. Guess it means another large vote bank that cuts across all caste and religious lines will now consider him as the person to vote for. Rahul may be considering a show called "Comedy Nights (telecast in the day) with Rahul"- as an alternate career; but, I do applaud him for showing his ire at SK's remark on NaMo. Mr. Kejriwal is now all out to expose the potential Ambani - BJP nexus. Boss when no one could figure out who crashed MA's Aston Martin; it will be 54,000 times harder to prove the supposed gas-scam in the making - which apparently has been signed by MA with the Congress Ministry. As a Reliance Shareholder though, I am disappointed. Late Mr. Ambani started the Company with the philosophy "become rich and make shareholders richer". The sons however did not pay attention to the latter part. No longer do people swear by Reliance as they used to in reverence.
A person I think very highly of has been arrested and that makes me sad. Mr. Roy; the follower of Mr. Ambani Sr.'s principles has been clamped on charges which I frankly find quite strange when it was the same system that allowed him to run the writ so far. Conspiracy theory suggests that the timing coincides with elections and his arrest may have something to do with starving his supposed political benefactors of much needed funds. Its a story for Ripleys Believe it or Not.
Finally, with politics becoming so much more interesting; I have lost interest in following the travels and travails of the Indian Cricket team. I have a conspiracy theory on why they happen to have become the favourite losing team - but then maybe the answer is too obvious.

I may not be as funny as the situation out there. We had a Members of Parliament pepper spraying and beating other; tearing up bills tabled and behaving in a totally unparliamentary manner to oppose the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh redefining the definition of anarchy for those who thought of Kejriwal as one 'cause of his many "dharnas".
Talking of AAP and Kejriwal; the govt. they ran in Delhi resigned (knowing it's time is up anyway); but before doing so - filed an FIR against India's most powerful businessman in India - Mr. Mukesh Ambani and a couple of Ministers from the Congress party for colluding on gas pricing. While Anil Ambani was fuming about the electricity pricing audit; the elder brother was surely not amused either. Guess Ambanis will not be contributing to AAP election campaign funds for sure. By the way, no sooner AAP gave up governing Delhi it announced its candidates for national elections. Great strategy - while Delhi will be administered under President's rule, AAP has no more external and internal worries in as far as governance is concerned - it was doing a terrible job anyway. I heard this from someone "Dogs chase and bark at moving cars - put the same dogs in the car and they will not know what to do". AAP is a great watch dog but bad driver. Will this fact eventually benefit the BJP the most?
Then we have Kejriwal word bashing Modi & BJP Co. on corruption and collusion with the rich; Modi taunting Rahul Gandhi & Congress Co. on corruption and collusion with the rich; and Rahul Gandhi criticizing the whole world (including his own) I suppose on issues of corruption and collusion with the rich. Each of these guys can change the lyrics but the sound of it all is still the same.
Mani must be regretting calling Modi a "Chaiwalla" as I don't see a single person in the tea trade now voting for anyone but Modi; who has now made local corner tea-stalls a gathering point for BJP's discourses on how they will wave the magic wand to make India glorious once again. The interim budget made by the finance minister attempts to please any particular section of the society was an actual displeasure to all. The newspapers have become advertorials for the political parties and when you count the adverts; it seems like a completely sponsored morning rag. My message to these guys - you are wasting tax money to announce what you have done; but had you done what you had to do then there would be no need to announce. If there was so much progress why is the economy limping at sub 5% and inflation leaping above 10%?
